The expansion Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal was released 30 years ago on 16th May 1996 for DOS.
I believe this was one of the very first official expansions for a PC game, which became quite common for many big games in the following years.

Other than Westwood, when did videogames abandon FMV cutscenes?
It was something that games used a lot for a while, but then also seems to have gone away very quickly.
I don't think I've heard of any retro-styled game using it. (Perhaps in part because it's probably more work than a decent looking 3D render.)
