On this day (April 26) in 1994, my favorite band released one of my favorite albums. 'A Date with The Smithereens' features some incredible basslines, Lou Reed on two tracks, and the whole thing is a damn banger.

At the time, my 14th birthday had just passed, I was getting even more into music, and 'A Date with The Smithereens' was MINDBLOWING then. And to me, it still hits. From the opening of 'War for My Mind' to lighter tracks to maybe one of my favorite songs of all time, 'Sleep the Night Away'. Over 30 years later, I still play this one regularly.

RIP original singer (and main songwriter) Pat DiNizio, and long live The Smithereens (who still perform and tour with other singers-- something I'm sure Pat would have loved).

My sister had The Completion Backward Principle on vynl ("If you can possibly manage the time, please play both sides at one meeting"). I badgered our mom to give me an advance on allowance, and I bought the cassette.

In the realm of criminally underrated bands, the Tubes were THE most criminally underrated. Super tight musically, and brilliant satirists of 70s and 80s culture. Their live shows were the stuff of myth.
