I’ve gotten a nice taste of 1980s B-movies and am concluding my #80BMovieChallenge with #1990TheBronxWarriors. Enzo G. Castellari’s rip-off of The Warriors and Escape from New York has gorgeous ideas and images, but doesn’t come together as a coherent, entertaining movie. After all, it is Castellari. But it is a good conclusion to my little series. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon
I’ve already watched this movie a few times, but it still has to be in my #80BMovieChallenge. A great and still underrated slasher classic, #TheSlumberPartyMassacre, cleverly directed by #AmyHoldenJones and cleverly written by #RitaMaeBrown. With plenty of subtle humor and everything but subtle symbolism. The killer’s tool is a drill, all right? — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon
I watched #Mutilations in all its VHS glory as part of my #80BMovieChallenge and it was a delight. A high school science field trip is stalked by an alien predator that kills student after student. Makeshift budget, lovely stop-motion and claymation effects, and awkward acting. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon
Just watched the highlight of my #80BMovieChallenge so far: #ChoppingMall. Security robots in a shopping mall go on the rampage! There's little chopping, more shooting, and what fun it is. Lasers! Explosions! Electrocutions! Boobs! Mullets! Hilarious dialogue! Synth music! ‘80s awesomeness! More lasers! Oh, and robots! — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon
High school drama turned slasher #HellHigh has an odd pace, is a little surprising and looks more high-end than its budget would suggest. The movie presents a relatively complex story and has its moments, but ultimately failed to excite me probably due to a lack of interesting characters. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon #80BMovieChallenge
I just managed to watch #SurfNazisMustDie before the end of the month, which wasn’t actually on my schedule, but entering @[email protected]‘s #MastodonBadMovieClub was too appealing. I found the movie tamer than the title suggests. Long exposition, but things really heat up at the end. Could have used more Mama Washington. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon #80BMovieChallenge #MBMC
In #Mankillers, a female CIA agent is assigned to train and lead an all-female squad to stop a renegade agent in Colombia. It’s a pretty good pitch, but dizzyingly amateurishly done (that’s easy for me to say, I’d hate to diminish any art or performance). There are lots of long legs, short pants, and voluminous hair. #AndySidaris would have made more of it. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon #80BMovieChallenge
The women’s prison drama is also a subgenre that has enjoyed some popularity. In #ChainedHeat, #LindaBlair’s character must survive in a prison plagued by violence, rape, drugs, corruption and staff brutality. It’s often crudely photographed and edited, and the boom operator must be having bad days throughout the shoot. I didn’t enjoy it much, not to be confused with #JonathanDemme’s #CagedHeat. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon #80BMovieChallenge
The rape-revenge thriller is a questionable subgenre in its own right, but a constant in cinema culture. The Corman-produced #NakedVengeance hits pretty hard and takes no prisoners in spirit with #DeathWish and #ISpitOnYourGrave. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon #80BMovieChallenge
The police thriller/slasher #ManiacCop is messing up my #80BMovieChallenge because I can’t tell if it’s really a B movie. In every aspect, the movie is superior to the other contestants in this challenge and plays in a different league. It’s solid! With #BruceCampbell, and a very surprising appearance by #SamRaimi. Made it to several sequels. — #CineMastodon #FilmMastodon
