Falling Water

This large waterfall in the French Vosges was getting plenty supply of water, as it was a very wet week when we were there, last year's summer. All that humidity made these rocks extremely slippery. And so I rather stayed on the path.

Tropical Shore

Or is it? With the vibrant colours of the boat house and the mist on the green slopes, this scene looks almost tropical. Could this be Hawaii? No, this is Lac de Longemer, in the French Vosges. This place, in this particular week, was as far from tropical as could be. It was a wet and cold summer week, with only a few sunny moments. Not the best weather for a camping vacation, but we had to make do.

Moss

On a wet and foggy early afternoon, I came across this lush green and mossy forest scene in the Vosges. The crooked birch tree stood out to me. This was on the first full day of what would be a very wet week in this French range of medium mountains.

Paris Skyline

For Quatorze Juillet, or the French national holiday known as Bastille Day, I had booked tickets on top of Tour Montparnasse, the ugliest building in Paris. The really nice thing about this skyscraper, though, is that the observation deck on the roof offers a spectacular view over the city. This was at sunset. Little over an hour later, the roughly 30 minute long fireworks and drone show around the Eiffel Tower would start. It was amazing to witness that from this spot.

Noctilucent Windmill

A midsummer shot from a night when there was a beautiful display of noctilucent clouds. I love it when these fleeting shapes of ice crystals, high up in the atmosphere, suddenly appear some time after sunset.

Sunset Poles

My favourite stretch of beach here in the Netherlands is between Bergen and Hargen. You can find multiple lines of these poles, running into the sea, and wave breakers in the form of stone dams, with loose rocks beside them, offering good foregrounds for seascapes. The best quality of this beach, though, is that there's usually nobody there in the evening. You can be here all by yourself, which is something I very much enjoy.

Disappearing City

A foggy morning in my hometown. The Adriaan windmill and the main church were completely shrouded in mist before, but had slowly started to appear again. This shot basically asked for a black and white treatment.

Misty Chocolate

This is the former chocolate factory or Droste. It is known around the world for its packaging design or yore, with a woman holding a box of cocoa, boasting the exact same scene, which is then repeated into infinity, smaller and smaller. You might have seen it somewhere.

Lago di Sorapis

One of the most stunning places I've been to in the Dolomites. Last year I was here on a warm summer day. Earlier this autumn, though, the lake looked radically different, being completely frozen over. Both times, I did the easy hike up (route 215), and the considerably harder hike down (route 216 & 213). The latter offers the most sensational views over the surrounding mountains and is very well worth the effort. You mustn't be afraid of heights, though.

Teylers Museum

The oldest museum in the Netherlands can be found in Haarlem, my home town. They have a Michelangelo exhibition now. I don't know if it's because of this, or if it's a more permanent change, but since a couple of weeks, the entrance is illuminated in these three colours. It suits the building quite well, I think. Left of the museum, the tower of the Grote Kerk (or Great Church) can be seen.
