Latest read, Troll Bridge (1992) by Terry Pratchett, from After the King; aging, cigarette smoking Cohen the Barbarian reminisces about 'the old days' with a troll.

Cohen: remember the big old wars, don't you? You must have fought.
Troll: I carried a club, yeah.
Cohen: It was supposed to be for a bright new future & law & stuff. That's what people said.
Troll: Well, I fought because a big troll with a whip told me to. But I know what you mean.

Latest read, The Ball Room (2005) by China Mieville, from Looking for Jake; a security guard senses a presence in a department store's playroom (knee-high in colorful plastic balls) and, after hours, sees a strange little girl in the room.
Terrific. A Bradbury or Rod Serling-like feel-- but with Mieville's modernism.
