La superficie della cometa è stata irradiata dai raggi cosmici durante il suo lungo viaggio, e quindi i suoi ghiacci superficiali come il metano mostravano solo una debole emissione all'inizio. Tuttavia lasciando il nostro sistema solare ha iniziato a emettere sempre più metano man mano che veniva riscaldata dal Sole.
