While 2degrees have completed their 3G network shutdown, one.nz & Spark are still mid throes of pulling their services.

Spark have discounts on new phone upgrades, until the beginning of March, in store only:

One.nz say there is an in store promo code for getting a discount, but do not detail how generous that is:

Emergency calls to 112, 911 or #triplezero are facing issues in countries that have done a #2Gshutdown or #3Gshutdown. The USA, Australia and Sweden all have experienced issues, regulatory intervention handset bans and other problems. I'm intending to do a write-up www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...

The 2G/3G shutdowns in the USA, Australia and Sweden haven't been a smashing success. There was (the threat of) regulatory interventions in all 3 countries, roaming and wholesale partners caught unaware, death in Australia, handset blocks in Sweden and Australia and the dismissal of telco executives in Australia. Emergency calls in Sweden requiring a paper clip after shutdown was "unexpected". I'm thinking of doing a write-up of the experience so far, also with information I heard from other countries (but can't attribute), eg that inbound roamers are a particular issue, because turning off mobile data to prevent bill shock may impair emergency calls, their calls lack AML data after shutdown or that the operators don't see the correct number for inbound roamers. Do you have any experiences you can share of what went right or wrong elsewhere in the world? If you want to communicate off the record, ask for my Signal. #2gshutdown #3gshutdown #VoLTE #mobile #emergencycalls

@backupbear the #3Gshutdown in #Australia including the #IMEI firewall is just nuts.

Also the fact that there was no testing number (i.e. 999 or 112 or 911) to verify functionality is the stupidest thing ever - ESPECHALLY IN AUSTRALIA where there's way too much dangerous shit, way too long distances in the countryside and help is way too hard to come by…

  • Shit like this is why #Germany idn't going to shut down #2G anytime soon (espechally since #eCall & #CellBroadcast rely on it!) and merely frequency allocations have been reduced instead to enshure rudimentary connectivity of #EmergencyServices...

Not shure if @BNetzA took the "New Zealand Approach" and permits shutdown of non-emergency calls in case of disasters and telling people to use #SMS for sending "pings" to loved ones as to not impede rescue efforts necessitating emergency voice calling.

Well.... that's an understatement. I've rarely seen a bigger, more complete, continent spanning utterly failure of planning and basic competency than #Telstra and the #3Gshutdown. It's been a complete and total omnifailure on every conceivable level.... technical, ethical, managerial, the list goes on.

Worst of all, it's remote and regional #Australia, where we're disproportionately poor and vulnerable, that has been left holding the bag for it all.

@phlogiston @torproject @guardianproject at least @BNetzA & @Bundesregierung didn't cancel #2G / #GSM / #EDGE with the #3Gshutdown like #Australia did recently.

And don't even get me started on #VoLTE [support](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6qb9dml6So)... - Like #Australia had *the glorious idea* of shutting down #3G *AND* #2G as well as *#allowlisting* [only specific](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPlTz-3estM) #IMEI|s, [banning > 500k devices](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIJavqEzEIw) for no good reason. Also *most* #VoLTE / #Vo5G - devices *explicitly use #2G / #3G for #EmergencyCalls! - Which is *#funfuckingtastic* in a place like Australia where *basically everything in nature conspires to hurt or kill humans*! #DownUnder #AUSpol #AUpol #tech #2Gshutdown #3Gshutdown #EmergencyCalling

I have solved* my 4G VoLTE #3gShutdown problem

*- well, at least unblocked myself so I can receive SMS so I could, in theory, port my number off #Optus † and maybe use #Telstra ? Via #AldiMobile maybe? Which possibly perhaps won't arbitrarily block my VoLTE-capable phone perhaps why not some people believe.

†- which is kinda holding my number hostage, since I need to receive SMS to prove I own the number for porting purposes, but am barred from using my old phone with the network because botched ACMA legislation.

@pandanus You're... Supporting forced obsolescence by hating on people for being thrifty. Weird take, but ok.
