The same folks who argued that rainbow flags celebrating pride were a direct threat to straight people, are now arguing that Alberta flags supporting separation are not a threat at all. The hypocrisy is stunning.

Flags are heavily laden with meaning. Many battles throughout history have been fought over flags.

Let's talk about the meaning behind the flags and be reasonable. But that requires a nuanced conversation and actual dialogue. And empathy. But we don't seem to be able to do that enough any more. Empathy is even bad, according to some communities.

So, a small town Alberta parade turns into a huge battle with death threats. Then, it has to cancelled entirely for safety reasons. Sad and predictable, unfortunately. Someone didn't understand the importance of flags.

Banning things never ends well. It only makes things worse for everyone.

***BTW, I support allowing a separatist float in a parade. I also support #2SLGBTQ+ Pride and rainbow flags and crosswalks everywhere.

Canada's new asylum law leaves 2SLGBTQ+ claimants fearing deportation

"Joshua Eisen, in-house counsel at Toronto's FCJ Refugee Centre, is one of several experts who presented before Parliament, calling for exemptions. 'It's just so hypocritical that at a time where Canada has this self-image of championing this liberal global order … we're introducing this extremely draconian legislation,' Eisen said."
