Dreaming Bread and Flourishing Folklore - The Bottle Imp

‘I’ll do it,’ she said. ‘I’m very happy to have shortbread broken over my head… I can think of worse things.’ The shortbread – dreaming bread – round, encrusted with almonds, fresh out of the tin, baked the night before according to Florence Marian McNeill’s instructions in The Scots Kitchen (1929), shivered a little and started to […]

I’m out here now
on the roof. Look!
I had to get nearer the sky,
For the city was too full of rooms
And I can’t be content with a window…

As I came over the Harden hill
A whaup on the moor was whistling shrill
In his pride to be first recorder
Of new life stirred in the sleeping ling
Of laughter and love and song—and Spring—
And the first blue day on the Border.

📚 Hayo just finished reading Lenin the Dictator by Victor Sebestyen

Nevermind the blurb. Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov was a horrible person. Probably on the autistic spectrum too. A man grown up in privilege, spending his mothers money in pursuit of 'the ultimate idea'. He rarely got ideas from experiences, instead everything was gleaned from books, giving him extreme tunnel vision. He came to power in a crazy sequence of events that should never have happened, and could barely cope with the weight of work when he got to create his communist state. His booksmarts killed millions, probably without him even realising. This book is well written, and does it very best to dig a few levels deeper than various propaganda sources.
