The memorial to the "General Offensive of 1 March 1949", Indonesian "Serangan Umum 1 Maret 1949", was a proof of resilience from the new Indonesian Republic against the Dutch colonial authorities.
The Dutch military based in the local Fort Vredeburg defeated the attacking forces after a few days. But Indonesia showed to the world it had capable defence forces, ability to regain the then de facto capital, holding it for a time and having strong popular support.
Netherland withdraw its troops from the city 3 months later. Within the end of the year, the defeated Dutch obeyed the UN and recognised the new republic, and then left Indonesia.
This offensive catapulted then colonel lieutenant Suharto into a national hero, clearing the road for the longterm presidency to come later.
The memorial honors the men and women making the offensive possible and a huge moral victory.
