I Never Learned Compassion for Idiots

What’s something you still refuse to learn because you survived this long without it? I’ve survived this long without learning compassion for idiots. I’m not about to start now. There was a time when being stupid came with consequences. Social ones. Professional ones. You had to either learn, shut up, or quietly fade into the background. Stupid people had to fit in. They didn’t get a microphone. They didn’t get a platform. They didn’t get rewarded for confidently […]

The Elm Street films were coming thick and fast by the late ’80s. The most notable thing about this one is that it marks the debut screenplay of Brian Helgeland, who went on to win an Oscar for adapting L.A. Confidential. It’s also an early film from director Renny Harlin, later responsible for Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and the famously ill-fated Cutthroat Island.

You wait all your life for a film about twins, then two come along at once. Or should that be four? Anyway, Jeremy Irons is absolutely terrific in this. David Cronenberg was on an incredible run through the ’80s, and this is right up there with his very best.

Apparently, because of a profit-share deal, this ended up being the biggest pay cheque of both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito’s film careers.

Pleased to have made a small contribution to that.

Apparently this film didn’t even get a theatrical release in North America, but from the producer of Star Wars, the director of Tron, and starring Mark Hamill, you can imagine how excited we were to see it in 1989.

Looking back at this, I was sad to discover that co-writer/director Jim Abrahams died in 2024. I was a huge fan growing up — Airplane!, Police Squad and the criminally under-appreciated Top Secret! were endlessly rewatchable. I’ve not seen the new version yet, but I gather it’s actually not bad.

Snow Days Are Accidental Therapy

I’m off today. And tomorrow. Not because I planned ahead like a responsible adult, but because the weather decided to throw a tantrum and dump snow everywhere. Roads suck. Visibility sucks. Everything is quiet in that creepy post-apocalyptic way where you half expect a siren or a synth to wander by. So I’m home. This means exactly three things are happening. I’m rewatching Fallout. I’m drinking a cup of coffee that’s actually good instead of whatever brown regret usually fuels a […]

The most notable thing about this ticket is the reminder that Die Hard was an 18 certificate in the UK. These days I’m pretty sure ITV show it unedited on Sunday afternoons.

In 1988, I suspect I went to see this more for Matthew Broderick than for Neil Simon. What I remember most, though, is coming away struck by just how good Christopher Walken was.

I’ve never walked out of a film but I nearly walked out of this. Which probably says more about me at 18 than it does about the film. I just found it boring. I should probably revisit with a more mature outlook.

Great Saul Bass poster though.
