Song of the Moment: Queen – “Another One Bites the Dust”

I was five years old when Queen released “Another One Bites the Dust,” so I have no memory of the song from the time it was being promoted as a single. It wouldn’t be until 1989 when Queen came int…

Happy birthday to David Balfe, ex Teardrop Explodes keyboard player and Strawberry Switchblade manager.

As well as doing all the admin, Balfey produced tracks from debut single Trees and Flowers to final single I Can Feel, he played keyboards on tracks like Beautiful End and Michael Who Walks by Night, and co-wrote Black Taxi too.

Here's an anomaly - 40 years ago this week Strawberry Switchblade were promoting their single, an electropop cover of Jolene. They mimed to it on BBC TV's kids' show Cheggers Plays Pop.

Thing is, it's a unique version - this isn't the 7" mix, the 12" mix, nor the BBC radio session version from a year earlier.

41 years ago today Strawberry Switchblade recorded their second BBC radio session for Janice Long.

Although they'd just completed their album they didn't do any songs from it. Instead, they recorded 3 new atmospheric keyboard-based songs & a cover of Jolene.

It's a peek into what the 2nd album would have sounded like had it happened. Here's a YouTube playlist of all 4 tracks.

On this day 40 years ago, 25 September 1985, Strawberry Switchblade released a single in Japan, Ecstasy (Apple of My Eye).

This squeaky Motown pastiche wasn't really a Strawberry Switchblade track - composed for a Subaru TV ad by Daisuke Inoue and Rumiko Varnes, Strawberry Switchblade were just paid to sing on it. In the end, only Rose sang.

Album Review: When In Rome – “When In Rome”

It was in 1988 when I really started noticing the synthpop acts that I still enjoy today. That summer and fall, I was exposed to Depeche Mode’s “Strangelove ‘88” and Erasure’s “Chains Of Love,” and…
