"Been So Long" charted on March 3, 1958, reaching No. 24 and remaining on the Billboard pop Top 40 for three weeks. It was the only Billboard Top 40 appearance by the Pastels. The record did better on the Billboard rhythm and blues Top 40, getting to No. 4 and remaining on the R&B chart for five weeks.

Baby Washington was of the

She called herself Lil
But everyone knew her as Nancy

school. Her name was Justine Washington but she was known professionally as Baby Washington or Jeanette "Baby" Washington. She had meager success on the pop charts, just barely making the Billboard Top 40 with "That's How Heartaches Are Made," which peaked at No. 40 where it remained for only one week. She did far better on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues chart. Her biggest hit there seems to have been "Only Those in Love," which got to No. 10 and charted for nine weeks. "Let Love Go By" is a deep catalog cut, never making the Top 40.

Back in the mid-1950s, Baby Washington was in the vocal group, The Hearts, which hit with "Lonely Nights" (1955)."

This is the earliest Boston rock 'n' roll hit record coming to mind.* It was taped at Boston's Ace Recording Studios, charting in September 1957 and ultimately reaching Billboard's No. 5 position, charting for 14 weeks. It went to No. 4 and remained for 11 weeks on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues chart.

* I have since recalled that the G-Clefs charted with "Ka-Ding Dong" in September 1956.
