RAMRODS
"(GHOST) RIDERS IN THE SKY"

Ramrods - (Ghost) Riders In The Sky
from The Backbeat Of Rock And Roll by Famous Flames

https://famousflames.bandcamp.com/track/ghost-riders-in-the-sky

The earliest hits of "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" were by Vaughn Monroe and Burl Ives; but this version by the Ramrods may be the earliest hit version remembered by people who are still living. I am an old guy and I was age 1 when the Burl Ives record hit in 1949. Most people today seem to associate this song with Johnny Cash but his record did not chart until 1979. So, for most of us, the Ramrods are the Riders in the Sky granddaddies. Their single charted on February 20, 1961. Strange to say, this classic only reached No. 30 and it fell off the Billboard pop Top 40 after a single week. Nonetheless it seems to have cast a very long shadow. The song was a country hit for Roy Clark in 1973.

"BLUES FOR THE RED BOY"

Blues For The Red Boy
from Classic And Collectable - Todd Rhodes - Dance Music That Hits the Spot! by Fidelity Masters

Recording of rhythm and blues got underway late in World War II, 1944/1945. "Blues for the Red Boy" is a good example of a phenomenon in those early days. It was released in 1947; it charted on October 23, 1948, in time reaching the No. 4 position; and it slipped off the Billboard rhythm and blues ("race") chart after 14 weeks, in 1949. Jukebox play was very important to popular music back then.

Listening to Glenn Miller on shuffle while sorting through and tagging my Billie Holiday collection. I need a whole lot more music from the 1940s.
