I need comfort viewing after today's treatment. Indulged myself at Fopp on the way home, bought some BluRays, including 1938's classic, The Adventures of Robin Hood. Impossibly handsome Errol Flynn, Olivia Dehavilland in screen goddess mode, Basil Rathbone.

One of the all-time best swashbucklers. Watching Errol Flynn movies as a kid was one of the reasons I took up sword fencing; I didn't want to pose, I wanted to train to swashbuckle for real.

First day of the year, first film of the year: restored cut of 1930s French classic, L'atalante at the Filmhouse.

Last saw this way back in my student days, in the very same Filmhouse, in the Long Ago. Nice to see it again after all these years, especially with dear French chum, who had never seen it before.

This evening's viewing: Modern Times. Been a long time since I last saw it, & while remembering the amazing & rightly famous sequence where Charlie is sucked into the cogs of the machine, I had totally forgotten about the equally amazing roller skate by the precipice scene, which still looks remarkable (the drop is in fact a glass matte painting, a clever bit of VFX for the era)
