Someone just reminded me that as we are now in 2026, we are in the future the iconic, 1920s classic Metropolis was set in.

Meanwhile the far-future world of the original Blade Runner is now seven years in our past, and the future of Space 1999 was the last century! A funny thing, time...

End of a very busy but satisfying Saturday in the book trenches. Now an amble to the Filmhouse for the first of the weekend's #Halloween treats: 1925's silent classic, The Phantom of the Opera, with live music. My first *centenary* film screening!

But first, FH nachos in the café-bar!

Tickets booked for bookshop chums & I to see the original, silent version of The Phantom of the Opera (with the amazing Lon Chaney) with live music at the Filmhouse for #Halloween

I've been to many anniversary screenings recently (going to a 60th anniversary screening of Sound of Music today, in fact), but this will be my first centenary one.

Just spent an afternoon in a beloved cinema I thought I'd lost, brought back to us, watching a film weave magic with light that was captured on celluloid a century ago, by an artist long gone, projected for us today, while Sink played live music, perfectly timed to the story.

Movie magic...

Tickets booked for special screening of the oldest surviving animated feature film, Lotte Reiniger's gorgeous Adventures of Prince Achmed, as the Filmhouse reopens this weekend.

1926 - nearly a century old, & being screened with live music. Wonderful.

Happy birthday, Harold Lloyd!

My dear dad made sure I was brought up in the Faith: plenty of Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, Tom & Jerry, and Bugs Bunny. He's been n his 80s now, and we still rewatch these together, and roar with laughter every time.

Tonight's contribution to what some would call "the greater good": a garland of bad critical calls from a pioneering film reviewer that I've titled "Robert E Sherwood Can't Win Them All".

Today marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of Conrad Veidt, great German actor and anti-Nazi.

He was brilliant in silent movies (I love Weimar Cinema!) but also in talkies too.

Sadly, he was limited in his speaking roles, once he left Germany, by his strong German accent.

In the ‘Cabinet of Doctor Caligari’ he somehow has to make a zombie soulful.
