I have had this nagging question about why federal impeachment cases in the US are tried by the Senate, rather than the Supreme Court. I am reading pages 15 to 25 of this article from 1970, which not only clarify the rationale for the current process of impeachment, but may also explain why securing a conviction is so rare.
