In 1520 Henry VIII met Anne of Cleves for the first time in Rochester. He’d agreed to marry her on the basis of reports of her beauty and a flattering portrait. She failed to meet his expectations, though, and he dismissed her as “no better than a Flanders mare”. Her first impression of him was not recorded.
