Paris Skyline

For Quatorze Juillet, or the French national holiday known as Bastille Day, I had booked tickets on top of Tour Montparnasse, the ugliest building in Paris. The really nice thing about this skyscraper, though, is that the observation deck on the roof offers a spectacular view over the city. This was at sunset. Little over an hour later, the roughly 30 minute long fireworks and drone show around the Eiffel Tower would start. It was amazing to witness that from this spot.

Soon, a few photography friends and I will be presenting each other our best shots of the past year. And with selecting your best shots, comes the dismissal of the ones you really like, but ultimately don't make the cut. I will be sharing those shots here, in chronological order. Yellow Staghorn

Another specimen of this bright yellow fungus. They are my favourite mushroom species. As tiny as they often are, you have to keep your eyes open when walking in woodlands with conifer tree stumps, as they tend to grow on those.

Amethyst Deceiver

This tiny purple mushroom stood out against a bright yellowy green leaf in the background. With the relatively short minimum focusing distance of a 100-400mm lens, it's easy to create buttery smooth bokeh fore- and backgrounds.

Miniature

This small toadstool stood out to me this morning in the wet grass. The rain droplets at the end of the blade of grass on the left and on the underside of the mushroom's cap were a nice bonus.

Fly Agarics

These two mushrooms practically stood on the path in the always beautiful National Park Zuid-Kennemerland in the Netherlands. With my long lens I could nicely isolate them from the background.

These white giants attracted my attention while hiking down on the beautiful Alpe di Siusi. I popped my 100-400mm on and found this frame. The hotel in the lower right corner shows the immense scale of these mountains.
