Special services were held for women, aiding them to rebirth.
The temple became better known as the "Women's Sanctuary" (女人の寺).

Special services were held for women (極楽往生/女人往生), aiding them to rebirth in Amida's Western Paradise (阿弥陀仏/極楽).
Senshi was visited by an old man in another dream. He told her of a statue stuck on Mt Hiei, miserable because it could not fulfill Amida's vow in bringing salvation to women.
The empress gifted Kaizan a portion of her villa to found a temple for the statue...Shinnyo-dō was born.
By imperial decree Kaizan realised Amida's wish, enshrining Ennin's statue in a hall within the grounds of Senshi's villa. In 992, after her death, the entire palace became Shinshōgokuraku-ji (真正極楽寺).
🍁FOR THE SALVATION OF WOMEN✨
Until recently women were forbidden from setting foot on holy Mt Hiei, confined to pray from afar.
A statue decided to take matters into its own hands so that the women of Kyōto had somewhere to worship.
Each November 15th this statue is celebrated.
