Restano in carcere in Israele Thiago de Ávila e Saif Abu Keshek, gli attivisti che hanno partecipato alla nuova e fallimentare spedizione verso Gaza della Global Sumud Flotilla. Il brasiliano è lo spagnolo sono comparsi oggi in tribunale ad Ashkelon. "Lo Stato ebraico ha chiesto di prolungare la loro detenzione di quattro giorni", ha spiegato all'agenzia France Presse Miriam Azem, coordinatrice per la difesa dei diritti umani a livello internazionale presso Adalah. L'organizzazione ha dichiarato che i suoi avvocati hanno incontrato in carcere Ávila e Keshek. Il ministero degli Esteri israeliano ha dichiarato che i due attivisti erano affiliati a un'organizzazione soggetta a sanzioni del Dipartimento del Tesoro statunitense. Il gruppo, la Conferenza Popolare dei Palestinesi all'Estero (PCPA), è stato accusato da Washington di "agire clandestinamente per conto" di Hamas. Sempre secondo il dicastero degli Esteri israeliano Saif Abu Keshek sarebbe un membro di spicco del PCPA e che anche Ávila sarebbe legato all'organizzazione e "sospettato di attività illegali". La Spagna ha condannato l'arresto di Keshek e ha respinto le accuse nei suoi confronti.
La flottiglia, composta da 50 imbarcazioni, era salpata da Francia, Spagna e Italia con l'obiettivo di aiuti umanitari ai palestinesi che vivono in campi procughi e tendopoli nella Striscia di Gaza. La spedizione è stata intercettata dalle forze israeliane nelle acque internazionali al largo di Creta, in Grecia, giovedì scorso. Israele ha dichiarato di aver espulso 175 attivisti, due dei quali sono invece stati portati ad Ashkelon per essere interrogati.  primo viaggio nel Mediterraneo della Global Sumud Flotilla, diretto a Gaza nel 2025, ha attirato l'attenzione di tutto il mondo. Thiago de Ávila and Saif Abu Keshek remain in Israeli prisons, the activists who participated in the new and failed Global Sumud Flotilla mission to Gaza. The Brazilian and the Spaniard appeared in court in Ashkelon today. “The Israeli State has requested an extension of their detention by four days,” explained Miriam Azem to France Presse, international human rights coordinator for Adalah. The organization stated that its lawyers met with Ávila and Keshek in prison. The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that the two activists were affiliated with an organization subject to US Treasury Department sanctions. The Popular Committee for Palestine Abroad (PCPA), the group, has been accused by Washington of “acting clandestinely on behalf of” Hamas. According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Saif Abu Keshek is a prominent member of the PCPA and Ávila is also linked to the organization and “suspected of illegal activities.” Spain condemned Keshek’s arrest and rejected the charges against him.

The flotilla, comprised of 50 vessels, departed from France, Spain and Italy with the aim of delivering humanitarian aid to Palestinians living in open-air prison camps and tent cities in the Gaza Strip. The mission was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters off Crete, Greece, last Thursday. Israel declared it expelled 175 activists, two of whom were instead taken to Ashkelon for questioning. The Global Sumud Flotilla’s first voyage in the Mediterranean, headed to Gaza in 2025, has drawn global attention. Israeli forces intercepted the vessels off the coasts of Egypt and Gaza in October. The crew members, including Swedish environmentalist Greta Thunberg, were arrested and expelled.

A due giorni dall’intercettazione, da parte dei militari israeliani, di alcune delle barche della Global Sumud Flotilla a largo di Creta, a Roma davanti alla Farnesina, “l’equipaggio di terra” si è mobilitato con un presidio per chiedere il rilascio immediato dei due attivisti, Thiago Avila e Saif Abukeshek, gli unici due sequestrati e portati in Israele. Le altre 173 persone, che si trovavano sulle barche fermate dalle forze israeliane, sono sbarcate a sud est dell’isola di Creta.
“Questa notte abbiamo fatto ricorso alla Cedu – spiega Tatiana Montella, del team legale italiano della Flotilla – perché la nave su cui viaggiavano i due attivisti batteva bandiera italiana, questo significa che c’è giurisdizione e responsabilità dell’Italia, perché è come se fosse successo sul nostro territorio”.
“Da quello che sappiamo sono stati trasferiti ad Ashkelon, dove c’è il carcere. Siamo preoccupati – racconta Maria Elena Delia, portavoce italiana della Global Sumud Flotilla – soprattutto per Saif, che essendo palestinese, rischia di essere condannato alla pena di morte”.
Con questo ricorso, si legge in una nota, il team legale della Global Sumud Flotilla denuncia una violazione grave e attuale della Convenzione europea dei diritti dell’uomo, in particolare degli articoli 2 e 3, che tutelano il diritto alla vita e vietano in modo assoluto ed inderogabile la tortura, i trattamenti inumani o degradanti e ogni forma di esposizione a tali trattamenti. Durante la conferenza stampa, i manifestanti si sono collegati con un attivista della Flotilla, in questo momento a Creta, che ha fatto sapere che, fra qualche giorno, le barche ripartiranno “con ancora più persone.”

Two days after Israeli military intercepted some of the Global Sumud Flotilla’s boats off Crete, in Rome at the Farnesina, the “land crew” mobilized with a demonstration to demand the immediate release of the two activists, Thiago Avila and Saif Abukeshek, the only two kidnapped and taken to Israel. The other 173 people, who were on the boats stopped by Israeli forces, disembarked southeast of the island of Crete.

“Tonight we filed a complaint with the ECHR – explains Tatiana Montella, of the Italian legal team of the Flotilla – because the ship carrying the two activists was flying the Italian flag, this means that there is jurisdiction and responsibility of Italy, as if it had happened on our territory.”

“According to what we know, they have been transferred to Ashkelon, where there is the prison. We are worried – tells Maria Elena Delia, Italian spokesperson for the Global Sumud Flotilla – especially for Saif, who being Palestinian, risks being sentenced to death.”

With this appeal, a note reads, the legal team of the Global Sumud Flotilla denounces a serious and current violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, in particular articles 2 and 3, which protect the right to life and absolutely and irrevocably prohibit torture, inhumane or degrading treatment and any form of exposure to such treatment. During the press conference, the demonstrators connected with an activist of the Flotilla, currently in Crete, who informed that, in a few days, the boats will depart “with even more people.”
